Car Rental in Montmartre, Paris 18th Arrondissement

Montmartre sits on top of an actual hill, and that changes how a rental car works here more than anywhere else in Paris. We rent and deliver cars across the 18th arrondissement, from the streets below the Sacré-Cœur to the flatter stretch around Château Rouge and Rue Ordener, and we bring the car to wherever you're staying rather than asking you to come find us. That matters because large parts of the Butte are now closed to private traffic, so driving yourself up to collect a car near Place du Tertre usually isn't an option at all. The question this address raises is where a car can realistically wait, and that's what decides how we work here.

The Butte is largely closed to cars now

Paris finished remodelling the streets around the Sacré-Cœur in 2025, and a lot of the summit is now off limits to through traffic. Rue Muller, Rue Lepic, Rue Ronsard, and Rue Durantin carry barrier points marked for local access only, and a car can enter only if it has a genuine destination inside, at walking pace. Place du Tertre itself has been pedestrian for years. If you're staying at an address right on the hill, don't plan to drive up and hunt for a spot outside your door, because there may not be a way to reach it by car at all. We deliver to the nearest point a car can actually reach and walk the last stretch with you if the address needs it.

Where the car actually waits

Down from the hill, around Rue Ordener, Château Rouge, and the Jules Joffrin area, the streets behave like ordinary Paris streets: parkable, metered, and occasionally backed by an underground garage in the newer buildings near Lamarck-Caulaincourt. If that's your address, we can leave the car curbside or point you to the nearest space. On the Butte itself, almost no building has private parking, so the honest move is to have the car delivered for the day you actually need it and collected when you're done, rather than paying to store it outside a street it can't reach anyway. For a stay based right on the hill, we'd point you toward a compact rather than anything larger. The hairpin bends on Rue Lepic and Rue Caulaincourt were laid out long before cars existed, and a compact is what actually fits the access points we use near Abbesses and Lamarck-Caulaincourt.

Parking near Montmartre, and what it costs

If you want the car nearby for a few days, an underground car park beats the street. The Saemes car park at Anvers-Montmartre, on Boulevard de Rochechouart, sits at the foot of the hill by Anvers métro, and Parking Cœur Montmartre at the Marché Saint-Pierre is about eight minutes on foot from the basilica, with three underground levels and lift access. Both take day and multi-day rates that beat feeding a meter for the same hours. Street parking in the 18th falls in Zone 2, payable 9am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and currently priced from 4 euros an hour, free after 8pm and all day Sunday. Since October 2024, heavier cars pay more: combustion or hybrid vehicles over 1.6 tonnes and electric cars over 2 tonnes are charged the surcharged rate, up to 12 euros an hour in Zone 2, capped at 150 euros past six hours. One more reason a compact is the sensible pick if you're leaving the car on the street here instead of tucking it into a garage.

Crit'Air is a factor, the ZTL is not

The 18th sits outside Paris Centre's limited traffic zone, which covers only the 1st to 4th arrondissements, so none of that applies here and you can drive normally. The low-emission zone is a separate rule and it does reach Montmartre: Crit'Air 3 and older vehicles are banned on weekdays within the A86, a perimeter that includes the whole of Paris. Every car we deliver already carries a Crit'Air 1 or 2 sticker, so it's one thing you don't have to arrange. Paris has extended the no-fines grace period on this rule through the end of 2026, but the sticker requirement stands regardless of whether fines are being issued yet.

CDG is the easy run, Orly is the longer one

Montmartre's real advantage is which airport sits on its side of the city. Porte de la Chapelle puts you on the A1 within a few minutes, and that road runs straight to Roissy with no toll on the way, typically 25 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. Orly is the opposite trip: you're crossing Paris rather than skirting it, and depending on your route through the centre or around the Périphérique, budget closer to 50 minutes to an hour. If your flight leaves from Orly, give yourself the extra time. Between the two, CDG is genuinely the easier airport to reach from an address up here.

Fines and tolls, settled after the fact

France enforces heavily by camera, and speeds drop fast around Barbès and the Périphérique on-ramps, so a fine during your rental isn't unusual. Since we don't hold a deposit, any notice that reaches us as the registered owner, whether it's a parking control on Rue Ordener or a speed camera further out, gets forwarded to you after the rental with a flat admin fee added and the original document attached. Nothing turns up as a surprise months later. The same goes for barrier points near the summit: driving into a restricted street up there can also draw a camera fine, so stick to the access route we give you.
