Most buildings in the 3rd arrondissement went up two centuries before anyone imagined a car, and it shows: no garage, a one-way street out front, and paid parking from République down to Rambuteau. Our car rental in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris works around that reality. We deliver the car to your address in the Marais, on Rue de Bretagne, beside the Carreau du Temple, wherever you're staying, and we collect it the same way. No counter, no deposit, no dragging bags across town to a desk. The one thing to understand before you drive here is the limited traffic zone, because the whole arrondissement sits inside it.

The rule that decides everything: the 3rd is inside the ZTL

Since November 2024, the 1st through 4th arrondissements form the Zone à Trafic Limité, Paris Centre's limited traffic zone. The rule is simple: you can't cross the zone as a shortcut, but driving to a destination inside it is allowed. Staying at an apartment in the upper Marais counts as a destination. So does taking delivery of a rental car at your door. You're legal.

What you shouldn't do is route through the centre on your way somewhere else. The planned fine is 135 euros, and while enforcement was pushed back to 2026, the signs are already up and plate cameras are coming. Google Maps marks the zone with a blue border. Apple Maps doesn't, so don't trust it blindly here. If you only need to skirt the arrondissement, the boulevards along its northern edge stay outside the zone.

Where the car waits, since your building has no garage

Almost nothing residential in the 3rd has private parking. That leaves two honest options, and which one you pick depends on how much you'll actually drive.

If the car would sit still for most of your stay, don't have it sit here at all. Book delivery for the morning you leave for the Loire or Normandy, and hand it back the day you return to the city. You skip every parking charge and the car never becomes a chore. Most of our Marais rentals work exactly like this.

If you genuinely need the car daily, use an underground public car park rather than the street. Saint-Martin near Arts et Métiers, Beaubourg by the Pompidou Centre, and the car parks around Place de la République all take day rates, and booking online ahead usually beats the drive-in price. A full day underground costs less than what the meter takes over the same hours.

What street parking really costs here

The 3rd sits in zone 1, the most expensive band of Paris street parking: 6 euros an hour, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm. Evenings and Sundays are free, which makes overnight street parking workable if you find a space, though on the Marais's narrow one-ways that's a real if.

There's a catch that changed in September 2024. Combustion and hybrid cars over 1.6 tonnes, and electric cars over 2 tonnes, pay a tripled visitor rate: 18 euros an hour in zone 1. A big SUV parked on Rue Charlot through a working day runs close to 200 euros. This is why we'll usually point you to a compact here. A Clio or a 208 slips through the one-way streets, fits the spaces that exist, and pays the normal rate. Take the SUV when you leave the city, not for the city.

Crit'Air and the low-emission zone, already sorted

Greater Paris bans Crit'Air 3 and older vehicles on weekdays inside the A86. Our fleet is recent, rated Crit'Air 1 or 2, and the sticker is on the windscreen before handover, so there's nothing for you to arrange. Just know the city limit is 30 km/h on most streets and 50 on the Périphérique, and cameras enforce both.

Getting out, and the toll you won't see coming

From the upper Marais, the clean exit north is Place de la République towards Porte de la Villette for the A1 and CDG. Heading south, Boulevard Beaumarchais drops you at Bastille and onto the quays for the A6 and Orly. Neither airport run has a toll.

Tolls start beyond the Île-de-France, and the A13 towards Deauville and Normandy is the one that catches people: it switched to barrier-free tolling, so there are no booths. You drive through, then pay online within 72 hours. Miss that window and the notice comes to us as the vehicle owner, and we pass it on with a flat admin fee, same as any speed camera or bus lane fine. Since we hold no deposit, anything like this is simply charged to your card after the rental, itemised, with the original notice attached. You'll never find out about a fine months later.
