Car rental without a credit card in Paris
Car rental without credit card Cars Available to Rent in Paris
Showing 1-12 of 32 carsAt most Paris rental desks, no credit card means no car. The industry standard is a hold of 800 to 2,500 € frozen on a credit card for the length of the rental, and a debit card gets you a polite refusal at the counter, sometimes after you've already paid for the booking. Car rental without a credit card in Paris is exactly what we built gorentcar to make normal: Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit are accepted, and nothing is frozen on your account. What follows is what you actually need to bring, and what the "no credit card" offers you'll find elsewhere tend to cost in the end.
Why the industry insists on credit cards
The credit card requirement exists to protect the deposit model. A desk that wants to block 1,500 € needs a card with a credit line behind it, because freezing that sum on a debit card empties a real bank account for weeks. So the rule was never written with you in mind. It protects how their risk is structured.
We structured it differently. There's no deposit to secure, so there's no credit line to demand, and the card question stops mattering. That's the entire trick, and it's why the answer here is a plain yes rather than a page of conditions.
What you need at pickup
Three things, all in the main driver's name: a driving licence held for at least one year, a passport or national ID card, and your bank card. That's it. The main driver must be at least 21, and under-25s pay a young driver surcharge that's shown during booking, never sprung at the desk. Visitors from outside the EU should check the licence side too. If your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it.
One honest limit: we can't take cash. The payment still has to run through a bank card, debit or credit, in your name.
What "no credit card" means elsewhere
You'll see aggregator filters promising debit-friendly rentals across Paris. Read the small print before trusting them. The common pattern is that debit cards are accepted only with the purchase of the desk's full insurance package, which can double the price of a budget rental. Another version accepts your debit card but still runs a deposit on it, which means the money is genuinely gone from your account until it's released. A third quietly restricts you to the two or three oldest cars on the lot.
With us the fleet doesn't shrink because of your card. The Twingo at 55 € a day, the 208 at 62 €, the 308 SW at 86 €: all of it books the same way regardless of what's in your wallet. If you want the mechanics of paying this way step by step, we've written up how renting on a debit card works separately.
FAQ — Common Questions Answered.
Can I really rent a car in Paris without a credit card?
Yes. Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit are accepted for your rental, and because we don't take a deposit, there's no credit line requirement hiding behind the booking. You pay the rental price with your card and that's the only money that moves. The card does need to be a real bank card in the main driver's name, and cash isn't accepted as a substitute.
Will anything be blocked on my debit card?
No. The standard industry practice is a pre-authorisation of 800 to 2,500 € that sits frozen on your account for the rental and often days beyond it. We don't do that, which is precisely why debit cards work here when they're refused elsewhere. The amount you see at booking is the amount that leaves your account, and nothing else is held.
What documents do I need if I'm paying by debit card?
The same three as any renter: a driving licence you've held for at least a year, a passport or national ID, and the bank card in your name. You must be 21 or older as the main driver. If your licence is written in a non-Latin alphabet, carry an International Driving Permit with it. Nothing extra is required because of the card type.
Are some cars excluded when I don't have a credit card?
The budget and standard fleet books normally on a debit card, from the 55 € Twingo up through the estates and SUVs. For the top of the range, conditions can differ by category and are shown at booking, so check the car page for the vehicle you want. What you won't meet is the classic desk move of shrinking the fleet to two old cars the moment a debit card comes out.
Why do other companies refuse debit cards in Paris?
Because their deposit model depends on freezing a large sum, and doing that to a debit card drains a real account rather than a credit line. Rather than change the model, most desks exclude the card. Some accept debit only if you buy their full insurance at the counter, which often costs more over a week than the deposit protection is worth. Read those conditions before assuming a listing is genuinely debit friendly.
